The Benefits Of Having Pets

Is it beneficial for us to have pets?. I wasn’t a pet person for a long time. I grew up without pets and I spent a good deal of my adult life without pets. I didn’t really think about them one way or another. I was vaguely aware that other children had dogs and cats but I didn’t ever feel deprived because of it. I have always had a respect for all living beings including insects and if I find an insect in the house, I will always remove it without killing or injuring it because insects have as much right to life as we do. I don’t know much about Buddhism, but I understand that they hold a similar belief about living beings.

I have experienced guilt when eating meat and the modern intensive meat production methods are horrendous. When I see photos of the way that animals are treated, it makes me wonder what we think that we are doing to living beings just to gain the benefit of cheap meat. I haven’t found a replacement for meat yet, but I think that I will have to sometime soon. I have always felt slightly guilty about eating animals, even before I became acquainted with pets.

If an animal was threatening harm to my family I would do what I had to do to protect them, but this is the only time that I would consciously injure any animal or other living being. Some people believe that plants have feelings too, but we have to eat something.

I was introduced to pets when I got married, specifically cats. I remember watching the first cat that we had, doing what cats do and it was a new and strange experience to me. We now have 3 cats. Two of them chose us and the third one was born to one of the cats that chose us.

Cat number 1, was feral and used to hang around in our back yard after it was born under the shed. This kitten approached me every time that I went into the back yard to smoke, it would sit next to me and it would want me to pet it. I didn’t pet it at first because I didn’t want to catch anything, but I eventual did. We then started to leave it a bowl of food and clean water in the yard every day. When we moved house, we tried to catch it to take it with us, but it would always run away. We still owned the house when we moved and after moving, I had to go back to the house to carry out some work and one day cat 1 appeared and sat a few feet away from me in the yard with it’s back to me the whole time. This was an obvious sign of disapproval from the cat. I saw that it had some injuries around it’s neck and we managed to catch it and take it to our new house. It lived in the garage for a week or so until a vet could check it out. The vet advised us that what appeared to be injuries was some sort of parasite in the skin. The parasite was eliminated, the cat entered our new house and has been with us for about 10 years now. The cat doesn’t go outside, by it’s own choice. If we leave a door to the outside open, it runs the other way, almost like it fears that we are going to throw it out.

Cat number 2 was born to cat number 1. Cat 1 was unknowingly to us, pregnant when we picked it up from the previous house and it appeared to get very sick after a few weeks. We took it to an emergency animal hospital and they told us that it was pregnant. Cat 1 had a litter of cats but only one survived due to the original vet giving it vaccinations while it was pregnant. We took cat 2 home in a small box that served as a bed and it was not expected to live. It lived and has been with us now for nearly as long as cat 1. Cat 2 doesn’t go outside. It sneaked out of the front door one day without us knowing. Later, we head a mewing and scratching at the front door and when we opened it, cat 2 sprinted inside, never going near an outside door again. It seems that it did not like it out there.

 

Cat 3 suddenly appeared outside our back door about 7 years ago. It sat at the door, looking into the house. Meowing constantly and at night we would hear sounds like it was being attacked. We started feeding it and in due course, it graduated to the garage. Cat 3 kept growling and attacking it’s own tail. We thought that it was crazy but we discovered that it had a broken tail. The vet amputated the tail and cat 3 has been very happy ever since.

 

Many people believe that pets are beneficial to humans, such as:

  • Lowering stress levels
  • Companionship for the lonely
  • Lowering heart attack risk
  • Helps keep older people’s brains sharp
  • Some pets encourage you to exercise, because they demand it.
  • A pet can reduce pain
  • Makes children less likely to get allergies

And many more benefits. Most of the results have come from various scientific studies.

There are also reported of pets having psychic powers and reports of pets saving their human’s lives.

I don’t like to use the phrase “owning a pet” because any pet owner will confirm that they don’t own their pet, it is more of a friendship and mutual understanding between the animal and human that they like living together and have a relationship of respect.

I still have not graduated to referring to the cats as he or she, I still say “it” but I don’t mean it as a degrading term, it’s just the way I am.

There are certain animal that have a revered status in the western world. Cats, dogs and horses come to mind. I have also know people with pet goats and monkeys. I cannot see any benefit of having reptiles as pets because I don’t think that they respond to a human at all, except to attack the human, given a chance.

From what I have observed, I believe that cats, dogs, chimps, gorillas and horses have a soul. It has been reported that some people experiencing a near death experience, go to, or through an area similar to a waiting room that is full of cats and dogs waiting for their humans to join them. I can easily believe this.

I feel that it is an honor to have a friendship connection to another species. My cats show me friendship every day and I return the feeling. I never did consider myself as a pet person, but being able to write this post highlights to me the fact that I definitely am an animal person. I try not to consider our cats as pets, but as different beings with different perceptions, not on an inferior level, just a different one, because who really knows what things animals perceive that we are totally unaware of.

Inversion Therapy For Health

Inversion therapy involves holding the body upside down or at an inverted angle for a period, usually for a few minutes at a time. The act of inverting the body is believed by many people to have beneficial health benefits.

There are several methods to achieve inversion. The most popular method is to use an inversion table, a specially designed piece of equipment that allows a person to clamp the ankle and lay back on a supporting bed. The bed can then be tilted to the desired angle. Other methods include gravity boots, headstands, handstands, hanging by the legs from a horizontal bar, hanging from strap supports and Yoga inversions such as the downward dog position.

The most well known benefit of inversion therapy is the relief of back pain. I have an inversion table and it works for me. I have had experience of lower back pain after certain exercise routines and my inversion table takes the pain away and seems to help the injury to heal faster.

Benefits Of Inversion

Some of the reported benefits of inversion therapy are:

  • Relief of back pain
  • Relief of joint pain
  • Strengthen ligaments, which results in strengthening  bones.
  • Maintain height
  • Regulate blood pressure
  • Improve posture
  • Control indigestion
  • Improve heart function
  • improve brain function
  • Assist the lymphatic system function
  • Improve mood, relieve stress and depression
  • Increased flexibility

I have found that regular inversion helps to relieve back pain from injuries and helps the injury to heal faster, It appears to help normalize my blood pressure, helps my muscles to recover faster from exercise, gets rid of headaches and neck/shoulder pain and makes me feel better in general. My inversion therapy session consists of full inversion daily, for 5-10 minutes per session on my inversion table.

I find that a good quality inversion table is the most convenient method for regular inversion therapy in the home. Most tables can be folded after use to minimize floor space and most tables allow the user to set the inversion to various angles, ranging from a few degrees right up to full inversion. It is wise to work up to full inversion slowly when beginning  a program because full inversion is very intense if you have not inverted before.

 

Precautions Before Starting Inversion Therapy

If you are considering inversion therapy and you have heart and circulation problems, eye conditions or any other conditions that requires regular doctor’s visits and/or medication, you should consult with your doctor before starting an inversion routine. Pregnant women and obese people should consult with a doctor before beginning inversion.

Manifest Your Desires

There are many practitioners of manifestation, all have slightly different methods that they claim really work. The common theme in all of the methods is expressing gratitude for what you already have and a total belief that you already have whatever it is that you want.

Being able to manifest your desires comes from the belief that we are all energy at our core and everything that surrounds us is also energy. Many people also believe that our individuality is an illusion and that all people and things are connected within a universal frequency field. Quantum theory hints at this being a possibility. Some beliefs go as far as to state that each person has an element of the creator in him or her, that we are a fragment of the creator and therefore we have the power of the creator to manifest our desires when, where and how we desire them.

Others believe that as we are composed of energy, including our thoughts, then we can somehow tap into the universal creative power in order to manifest our desires. This sounds similar to the creator theory without the religious element. I am open minded and I would not discount any theory unless it was proven to my satisfaction that the theory was wrong and that isn’t going to happen any time soon.

All methods of manifestation have the common requirement that you must believe that you already have your desire in the “now”, the explanation for this is that your energy attracts your desires and if your thought process is “wishing” for something to appear, it attracts a life long experience of scarcity because the vibrations that you are giving out are of a” wanting for something” rather than “already having”, and the “wanting for” is therefore what you will attract. The methods vary as to how to express this belief of already having your desire. Meditation or visualization of the desire seems to be the generally accepted form of expressing belief that you already have your desire. Affirmations can play a part in the manifestation process for some and it seems to be an allied topic to me.

The TV program Star Trek: The Next Generation, had the holodeck, a room where objects, locations and people are simulated by matter, beams and fields onto which holographic images are projected, which appear solid to the touch. This matter is known as “holomatter”, and disintegrates when the program is ended. The Holodeck users can program their individual desires into the computer and experience them within the room for as long as they wish. As the theories in Quantum Physics have been updated and expanded upon, I wonder if it will ever become a reality, or are we already in a holodeck simulation?. The point of mentioning this is that it appears to be a (fictional) form of manifestation.

The theory some people have, that matter is a low vibration frequency, can have implications for manifesting desires. The thoughts from the brain are frequencies and once a thought has been released, it has the potential to materialize. Whether one can manifest desires or not is open to investigation. I suspect that it is easier to manifest a negative thought than a positive one because it is easier to concentrate on negative thoughts.

My suggested method for manifesting your desires.

  • Be clear on your desire and don’t try to manifest a whole list of desires all at the same time. Begin with a small goal.
  • Spend some time every day visualizing your desire. Visualize yourself experiencing the desire as if you have it already. Be very specific in your visualization.
  • Repeat positive affirmations to yourself every day.
  • Take some form of action towards your desire every day.
  • Be grateful for what you already have, and spend some time every day thanking God, the Creator, the Universe (whatever suits you) for your gifts.
  • Keep the routine going and don’t give up on it.

Diet For Weight Loss

There are so many weight loss diet plans available that it is difficult to decide which one to use. The guiding factor should be to find a healthy plan. The generally accepted figure for healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs a week which equates to about 3,500-7000 calories. Using these figures, a person who wishes to lose 2 lbs a week should cut about 1000 calories from their daily diet. Calorie counting however, can become very tedious very quickly.

There are many diet plans claiming that if you use their system, you can lose much more than 2 lbs a week. The claims may or may not be true, I don’t need weight loss diets myself, but I do research them for others. I have seen all types of diets work for some people and I have seen the same diet plan work for one person but not another. As with most physically related things, I think It all comes down to body type and dedication (or lack of dedication).

Weight loss can be achieved without a purchased diet plan but you have to do the research for yourself and this can be very time consuming. Basically, sugars and starchy foods should be cut back substantially, make sure that you eat foods containing protein and fats, and make sure to exercise. Eat fats for weight loss? the short answers is that fats are not all the same and some are beneficial to health. Saturated fats can occur naturally in meat and dairy products, unsaturated fats come from plants, vegetables, olives, nuts, and seeds and some fish. Trans fats can occur naturally in certain foods and meat. The artificial trans fat (hydrogenated) in some foods, normally heavily processed, is not healthy and should be avoided. I work on the theory that naturally occurring fats in food can’t be all that bad, but everything should be done in moderation and be wary of any processed food that has “light” or “low fat” printed on the packaging.

Weight training is a great exercise for weight loss. To lose weight, a body must burn more calories than it uses and after a weight training session, the body continues to burn calories. As you add more muscle, you should find it easier to attain and keep to your target weight because muscle burns more calories than fat during the day.

Men seem to lose weight more easily than women and this observation is backed up by science. Men have more lean muscle tissue than women and the muscle tissue burns more calories than fat. Studies have found that the different results, between men and women are very obvious at the start of the diet program but tend to even out over the longer term.

Another issue with weight loss in the present day, is the quality of our food. Science has been tinkering with natural produce and the results on food quality are not really fully known. We can only do our best to find the most natural of products to consume.

The conclusion I have arrived at regarding diets is to stay away from a diet program that promotes  only one type of constituent such as fat, protein or carbohydrates while cutting out others almost completely. I tend to like the programs which have a more balanced approach and also suggest that exercise should be completed along with the dietary component. My key components to a great weight loss program are healthy food with a traditional balance of protein, carbs and fats, exercise, primarily resistance training and the determination to succeed.

 

 

Water For Health

Is drinking water necessary for good health?, the answer is yes, but the water that you drink needs to be as pure as possible. It seems that obtaining untainted food and drink is virtually impossible today but just by attempting to obtain the most high quality, natural food and drink products will help.

Water makes up approximately 60% of the male adult body and 55% of the female adult body. We are constantly losing water from our bodies throughout the day and this needs to be replaced. An average human loses 4.5 to 6.5 lbs of water during the day through exhalation, perspiration, urination and consumption of heavily processed foods.

 

How Much Water?

The general health industry advice is 8 ounces of water, 8 times a day. There is a wide range of views on daily intake from independent researchers but the 8 ounces, 8 times a day seems to be a minimum. Studies have shown that we cannot survive more that a few days without drinking water but we can survive for a few weeks without food. The required daily water intake for maximum bodily efficiency is (as is most everything else in life) highly dependent on the individual.

Can I Drink Too Much Water?

Studies say yes. The medical term for this is Hyponatremia ( low sodium in the blood) and this can occur due to the amount of water you drink over a short period of time rather than the total amount during a day. In basic terms, a large amount of water consumed in a short period of time will lower blood sodium levels and could, in the most severe cases, lead to death. I would think that moderation is the key to avoiding this issue.

The Purity of Water

There are many factors affecting the purity of our drinking water. The Municipal supply to our houses and businesses has chemicals added to it due to the “purification process” and the pipes carrying the water can also add unwanted chemicals into the supply. Fluoride is added to many Municipal water supplies. The Fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay but there are rumors that it is not effective in preventing this. Some Countries have banned, rejected or stopped fluoridation of their water supply. China has banned it’s use, most Western European countries have stopped fluoridation and Japan has rejected it’s use due to it’s toxicity. My opinion?, I would rather that Fluoride was left out of the water supply and I’ll take care of my teeth myself.

Obtaining Pure Water

I have researched this topic in a casual manner on and off. I buy bottled “spring” water from the local grocery stores to drink and use for cooking but I know that the quality ranges from good, to variable, to suspect.  The “spring” water is usually packaged in plastic bottles and the chemicals in the plastic can tend to leech into the water. The claim of “pure spring water” in bottled water products has been shown to be suspect in certain cases and the Fluoride content is unknown. I think that the only sure way of obtaining the purest water is to filter it yourself. There are several companies that supply whole house filters for residential use and these filters can remove heavy metals, pharmaceutical residue, fluoride, bacteria and more. The best, most effective filter systems are expensive but do I aim to install one eventually.

Conclusion

The body needs water and at the end of the day, drinking any water ( that is not infected) is better than not drinking it. We should strive to drink the purest, most untainted water daily, but this can be expensive, time consuming and involve much research. My personal opinion is that drinking water in it’s basic form, not in the form of coffee, tea, flavored drinks etc, is essential. If you are carry out fitness training or have a physical job, then my experience tells me that you need more than the 8 ounces, 8 times a day in order to function efficiently. It is a pity that we can’t get the pure drinking water that we need to function at optimum performance easily, but “it is what it is”.

Watching The News

Is daily consumption of News from TV, newspapers,  the internet and any other source bad for your health?.

The theory that what you think about most is what you become, would suggest that a person should avoid the daily consumption of News, and only absorb it when necessary. A few years ago, it became apparent to many people that the mainstream News organizations all had their own particular agenda and that each of those News outlets presented topics favorable to their agenda in a positive manner and did the opposite to topics on their blacklist. Even with bias, I would guess that 90% of all mainstream News is negative in some manner.

I think that initially, the online News websites, blogs etc, attempted to broadcast impartial news, but once this ultramodern form of News dissemination became popular and was recognized to possess some power, many of the internet News services seem to have been co-opted into taking sides, co-opted by who and for what purpose?,  well I don’t know.

The majority of the News is negative, and this is why it is probably bad for a person’s health. If a person can use affirmations, both visual and audio, to change their core thought processes resulting in positive, productive, life changing results then watching a daily stream of negativity and fear producing material on the TV can be assumed to have the power to influence the individual in a  negative, unproductive and life changing (for the worse) manner. 

In his book, “Think And Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill wrote “Our brains become magnetized with the dominating thoughts which we hold in our minds, and by means with which no man is familiar, these “magnets” attract to us the forces, the people, the circumstances of life which harmonize with the nature of our dominating thoughts”. The author is basically stating that we attract what we think about most, so after a person’s daily (or more) mainly negative News programming, what conditions will they attract into their lives?.

I am not suggesting that anyone should become one of those annoying hyper positive neurotics that one meets from time to time, but it has been stated time and again in various different ways that “you are what you think”  by many respected people, so be mindful of what you think about. 

Test the theory for yourself and do not watch or read any News for 30 days and then evaluate your health after this period. Just about everything in the News broadcasts are beyond our control anyway and if an item is negative, knowing that the extent of our individual influence over the situation is just to “know” about it, creates even more negative vibrations within the mind and body. Sometimes it is better not to know certain things in order to not have to process them through our minds.

My Trading Style

Here is a quick breakdown of my style of trading (Forex).

The red horizontal lines are support and resistance. These are prices that have been hard to get above or below in the recent past. When a price approaches support or resistance, there is more chance that the price will reverse it’s current trend, so it should be watched.

The chart uses Japanese candlesticks to record price. There are other styles of displaying price available. A red candle indicates that price is falling, a green candle indicates price rising.

My profit to loss ratio is a minimum of 1.5. If I can get more, I will, but I will not take a trade lower than this ratio.

  1. The candle approaches the support line, and the 2 candles with the long lower tails indicate to me that prices are likely to rise.
  2. I place a long trade to buy at 1.23856, with a stop/loss at 1.22119 and an initial “take profit” target at 1.25957.
  3. I place my stop/loss below the long tail on the last candle before price rises to make it harder for it to be reached but still keep to my profit to loss ratio.
  4. The price falls after the initial rise and makes me nervous but it doesn’t stop me out and I leave it alone to see what price will do next.
  5. Price rises again, falters for a couple of days, but eventually continues on up and triggers my “take proft” (sell order).

Any candles that are in the green area between the times that I bought and sold mean that I have profit. If they are in the red area, I am at a loss, but unless price goes lower that my stop/loss order I stay in the trade.

As you can see (in hindsight), price continued to rise significantly after I took my profit and closed out the trade and would have made me a huge profit if I had stayed in the trade but I decided to take my profit before price hit the next red resistance line.

The actual profit all depends on how many units you are trading, for example 10,000 units could have made about $200 profit, 100,000 could have made $2000. The chart is showing daily prices where each candle represents one day of price movement. This trade took 10 days to hit my sell order and produce the profit that I desired. $200 profit for 10 days is ok, $2000 for 10 days is great. The size of the contract can be scaled up or down depending on the size of your trading account.

Traders usually trade on margin which basically means that the trader only needs a small percentage of the total trade value in their trading account in order to place the trade. This allows the trader to have much larger trades than would be possible without margin. Each broker has their own limits and policies for margin trades.

I caution you not to trade anything until you have found, and you are comfortable with a trading style. It does not really matter which style/system you use as long as it works for you and keeps you in profit. You will have to investigate different systems  in order to find the one that you like. Quit Smoking

The ultimate smoking alternative is quitting, it is not an easy option however. I have attempted to quit several times but I admit that I did not try very hard. One attempt involved hypnosis and this did not work at all for me. The hypnotist did manage to make smoking taste bad for a few days but I worked through it. Another attempt was with the use of nicotine gum. The gum took the edge of the craving but was not satisfying enough to replace a cigarette.  The thing that worked for me was electronic cigarettes. I count this only as a partial quit because I still get my nicotine through a vapor but I don’t get any of the tobacco by-products, such as tar. The vapor has unknown health effects at this time but so far, studies seem to indicate that the vapor is significantly less dangerous than tobacco smoke.

Nicotine is said to alter the balance of two chemicals, dopamine and noradrenaline in your brain. Nicotine changes the levels of these chemicals in the brain and many smokers find this effect enjoyable. When you inhale the nicotine, it rushes to your brain, where it produces feelings of pleasure and reduces stress and anxiety.  Many smokers enjoy the nicotine rush and become dependent on it. Other substances that may be added to the tobacco could also be addictive.

I have known former smokers who have successfully quit “cold turkey”, used nicotine gum or patches, received hypnosis treatment, have used self-hypnosis and affirmations or started with nicotine e cigs and scaled down the nicotine content over time to nothing. Whatever method the smoker used, it worked for him/her. The conclusion I have arrived at is that every person is different, with a different physiological and psychological makeup, so the successful smoking cessation method must match the individual. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another and it is a case of trial and error for the individual to find the successful method of quitting.

Some experts believe that nicotine is more addictive than heroin and cocaine, if this is true, then it is not surprising that it is so difficult for most people to quit smoking. I have known people who are occasional or social smokers, but they are few and far between.

Another factor to consider regarding smoking is the fact that companies are beginning to impose a substantial nicotine surcharge on the medical insurance of employees who smoke or use nicotine in any manner. It is not a good idea to assume that you will not be tested for nicotine and state that you do not use nicotine in order to avoid the surcharge because you face the possibility of being caught out and losing your medical coverage at a critical time for you. The only choice is to pay the surcharge if you are wise. I came across this issue once. The wording on the document was “are you a smoker”, I knew what they were up to, so I asked the benefits department if they counted vaping as smoking. Within a week, the wording on the document had been changed to “are you a nicotine user” and the surcharge was changed from a “tobacco surcharge” to a “nicotine surcharge”. This seems to be discrimination against smokers, and it is, but don’t worry, some other group is the next target, probably the overweight, just follow the money to ascertain the reason that these surcharges are appearing everywhere.

Don’t Have All Of Your Eggs In One Basket

Most of us have heard this idiom before but many people still rely on one place to supply all of their income. Doing this is a most dangerous example of putting all of your eggs in one basket.  Many of us are now aware that the conventions of the 1950’s and 1960’s don’t apply to the world of work anymore. Most employers will get rid of an employee for any reason that they deem advantageous, even the most loyal and hard-working of employees are subject to this, especially in the so-called “Right to work” states. The phrase “Right to work” sounds so great, insinuating that this law is about worker’s rights when in fact it is a union busting tactic and allows employers to dispense with an employee at will. The employee therefore should feel that he/she has the right to dispense with the employer’s employment at will, although you will not find this prominently displayed in any workplace.

Every person needs to evaluate their financial circumstances at regular intervals, which brings up another common phrase, that of saving for a rainy day. Everyone should save money from their income, even if it is only a couple of dollars a month. The act of saving will get you into the habit and hopefully the savings will dramatically increase as earnings increase.

Acting now to diversify your income will save you the potentially devastating consequences of losing your one job, that pays all of your bills, that puts food on the table and a roof over your head. I can think of several ways to take some of those eggs and put them into different baskets. One great way is to complete some contract work online. The work is not permanent and you need to work with multiple websites to ensure that cash keeps rolling in, If nothing else it may supply the money for a savings plan and if you keep at it, the jobs get more interesting and the pay can increase. Working “gigs” on websites like Fiverr is along similar lines, except for the fact that you are using your particular skills such as typing, internet marketing, graphic design etc. Both of these ideas have the potential to generate a full-time income and even a business. Part time work, after completing your full-time job puts another egg into another basket for you, if you have the energy. Some are well paid, it all depends on your skill set. In theory, this is a great way to diversify your income, the problem is that it is time-consuming and potentially very hard, but it is an option.

Starting your own business is a dream for many people. To be your own boss and reap the full rewards for your efforts is a wonderful and motivating goal. A business can be started while you still have a full-time job, this makes the transition into self employment a whole lot easier. The general advice for starting your own business is to pick the thing that you love to do and go for it. Failing that, use your individual skills to generate money for yourself.

The goal is to have multiple baskets, each containing one egg. Each basket represents an independent source of income. The dream of course is to receive passive income, the basket that holds the golden egg.  This is income that generates an inflow of cash month after month without a need for any labor. It requires an initial effort, but after that, you are enjoying another independent income stream, labor free.  Royalties from artistic works, affiliate marketing and pensions fit into this category.

US To UK Translations

A look at some words that can cause confusion between Americans and the British.

 

U.S to U.K words.

CHIPS, in the U.S. this refers to potato chips, but chips in the U.K. are what Americans call fries. The British delicacy of fish and chips refers to a battered fish, normally Cod, with what Americans would describe as something similar to steak fries.

HOOD, as in the hood on a vehicle. The British call the vehicle hood the bonnet.

TRUNK, as in the trunk on a vehicle. The British call the trunk the boot.

PISSED, A pissed American is a very annoyed one but in the U.K. if you are pissed, you are falling down drunk.

RESTROOM, unknown in the U.K. If you need the restroom when in Britain, you’d better ask for the toilets if you are desparate.

ELEVATOR, the British don’t have elevators, they have lifts.

CANDY, Brits don’t eat candy, they eat sweets.

GAS, British vehicles don’t run on gas, they run on petrol which is why they have petrol stations and not gas stations.

STORE, the British generally make their purchases at a shop but they understand “store”.

PANTS, pants are trousers in the U.K.

JUMPER, British men wear jumpers, no, they are not wearing women’s clothing, they are wearing what Americans call a sweater.

TIRE, a tire is still a tire in the U.K. but it the British spelling is tyre.

FAG, this is not a derogatory term for a gay person in the U.K., it is slang for a cigarette.

TRACTOR-TRAILER, the British call them articulated lorries.

FREEWAY,   The British call them motorways.

APARTMENT, an apartment in the U.K. is called a flat.

Americans have a fascination with the British word WANKER. This is a very derogatory  expression in the U.K. It refers to a specific act but it is generally used to describe an unpleasant or stupid person.

 

U.K. Slang words. 

There are many regional differences in the use of slang in the U.K. These are mainly from South East England and London.

Crisps = the British name for potato chips

Spuds = potatoes

Whistle = A Cockney rhyming slang term derived from “whistle and flute” which means a men’s suit.

Apples and Pears =  Cockney rhyming slang for stairs.

Rub-a-Dub-Dub = pub

Merchant Banker = rhyming slang for wanker, you could also hear “ships anchor”, “Ricky and Bianca” etc. I personally like “merchant banker” because that term and “wanker” seem to go so well together.

Telly = TV

Dicky Dirt = shirt, (more rhyming slang).

Pigs Ear =  beer

Bloke =  roughly equivalent to guy or dude when referring to a particular man. Bloke is not used in the U.K. as a direct greeting to someone. “Hey dude” or “hey man” is ok, “hey bloke” is totally wrong and a Brit would think it was amusing.

Tomato =  it’s a tomato in both countries, just pronounced differently, more like tomayto in U.S. and tomarto in U.K. The British know what you are talking about if you say tomayto, but try saying  tomarto in the U.S.A. and you will get the big “huh?”.
